So here's another idea:
# we leave the SEEK_TO_COL stuff the way it is (compare SEEK key against next
indexed key)
# when in optimize we get a SEEK_ TO_ROW, we instead not compare the _row_ part
only of the next indexed key and the current key. If the rows are the same, for
sure we want to SEEK (the row must end outside of the current block, since the
next block starts with the same row), if rows are not the same, we might to
SKIP, SKIP,... since the row _must_ end on the current block. That needs a new
compare method :( at least in 0.98.
On the other hand I do not want to over-complicate this more than it already is.
I also want to emphasize... Like stats in any traditional relational database,
this is meant to get it right as much as possible without complete information.
It's not meant to get every single SKIP vs. SEEK decision right - that is not
possible without complete information about exactly how many Cells the SEEK
would be able to SKIP. Whether we'll stay within the current block or not is
simply a good proxy metric. If there is a better one, I'd love to hear that.
