[~Apache9] does Matteo's reasoning above for the current state of the world
make sense / address your concerns?
I suspect if we want to fix this properly (for e.g. 2.y or later) we'll need to
take a look at the combination of our WAL interfaces and the stuff that's
coincidentally built on them (namely replication). Given that, I'm fine with
this as a stop-gap measure.
