I don't see a rel/0.98.23 tag, but I believe this change was included in the
0.98.23RC0 that passed a vote. Do you still want a simple revert there? Or
would you prefer I leave the 0.98 fix version here and make a follow-on that
backs out the changes for the next 0.98 release?
