Patch v27, published on review board, aligns with the copy-on-write semantics
Eshcar described above in the compaction pipeline.

For consecutive operations that modify the pipeline, the read only copy created
by the first operation would be overwritten by successive (write) operation.
Patch v27 achieves copy-on-write semantics by using the volatile
ImmutableSegment array as pipeline.
Read operations such as getScanners() would get CopyOnWriteIterator based on
snapshot of this array which is immune to concurrent write operation(s).
The 70 iterations of TestHRegionWithInMemoryFlush were performed on top of
HBASE-17081 and HBASE-17373.
