I am leaning towards this as well.  It's a cool feature for development and 
testing, but i can't think of a reason to use it in production.  As you 
mentioned, it makes more sense to do encoding during flushes and compactions 
and not during the read path.  Storing unencoded on disk and encoded in memory 
would make sense for workloads where the average block is read less than once, 
but that's pretty uncommon and that scenario is not likely to make good usage 
of the block cache anyway.
