Try @busbey suggestion for src tgz:
git archive --format=tar.gz
--output=/path/to/rc/artifacts/hbase-2.0.0-alpha-3.tar.gz
--prefix=hbase-2.0.0-alpha-3/ 2.0.0-alpha-3RC0.2
Compare to what assembly src.tgz generates.
