[~stack] I believe the shadedjars complaint is something that is wrong with the 
point in time where this feature branch was created. I planned to do a rebase 
onto the current master soon. Sorry for not catching the checkstyle issues on 
my side. I can put up a patch that fixes that if you would prefer.

Let's just keep this on the feature branch for the moment. I'll likely start a 
discussion on the umbrella JIRA about when we should merge this into master and 
what kind of testing should be done first.
