This patch is the same as what was provided for HBASE-19486 with one difference:
The changes to the BufferedMutator interface have been reverted and moved to an
extra intermediate interface so the backwards compatibility on that interface
is retained.
Please verify if this idea is acceptable for integration into branch-1
