[~apurtell], just an FYI in case you don't see it: this backport reminded me 
about HBASE-18133 and HBASE-18135. Just put a rebased patch for 18133, and will 
do the same for 18135 soon. They're both implementation improvements (not 
user-facing), so they'll probably miss 2.0.x, but will go into a 2.1.x 
eventually.
