[~appy] I don't recall now, but I have having some trouble before with this
patch because of namespace collisions with the HBase CollectionUtils class.
Some fresh eyes, and some fresh code, and it was a lot easier this time around.
Edit: I cannot remove this class entirely because it has some functionality
that is not offered by the Apache Commons library.
