Wei-Chiu Chuang commented on HBASE-19982:
-----------------------------------------

bq. FWIW I'm -1 on 2.9.0, since it's flagged as non-production. But if 2.9.1
was out and stable when the work started I'd want to aim for it, since it looks
like the Hadoop community is phasing out maintenance releases on anything other
than the latest minor release.

The Hadoop community is gearing up for a 2.9.1 RC0, BTW.
2.7 -- LinkedIn is still on it, so expect to have more releases coming out of
it. At least LinkedIn is running a 2.7.6 release vote now.
2.8 -- Yahoo! is on 2.8.x and I don't expect them to bump up soon. 2.8.4 is in
preparation.
2.9 -- I am not sure any large deployment is running it in production though.

Yep. And there are 3.0.2 and 3.1.0. I'm not sure why we are having so many
parallel releases. But as long as one of the large Hadoop user is still on a
release, you can expect more maintenance release will come out of it.

> Hadoop 2.8.3 and 2.9.0 are both releases, and we haven't been keeping up with
> them.
> Several tasks we need to do here, will define them in sub tasks as we go
> along.
