* The API checker does not flag the changes as incompatible
* The defaults preserve as close as possible the current behavior (e.g. if
replacing a single threaded process with one that can use a configurable number
of threads, set the default to 1 thread)
An amendment to a branch-1.4 commit that changes a default is fine, if you'd
like to use a different and new default for branch-1 (aka 1.5.0).
