I agree with your observation - it is hard to know whether user filters would
do the right action.
I was thinking that the deref can be done outside filterRow() - in
nextInternal() e.g.
How about:
1. call deref() for every element in results
2. call filterRow()
3. call ref() on the remaining elements in results
