Good question: my interpretation was that we warned against them (because 
they're non LTS), but we don't know of any discrete problems in using them.

They may have started out in anticipation of problems, but we've already had 
reports of failures and told folks to stick to Java 8 as a result. (e.g. 
HBASE-21109) We need stronger language than "we're not sure".
