there was a related issue we should also backport that was needed to avoid some
test failures. I don't recall why it didn't show up until later. let me see if
I can find it.
there's also a needed doc change so that folks know what they need to do to
make standalone mode work (because LocalFileSystem from Hadoop doesn't do
hsync/hflush)
