I'd recommend breaking off any branch-1 stuff to another jira. the Ruby version
on branch-1 is currently Ruby 1.8 (per defaults in that version of JRuby) and
that version doesn't work at all in JRuby 9k. The Ruby version in JRuby 9k is a
couple of major incompatible Ruby versions newer. The jiras for the branch-2
move to JRuby 9k should explain the problem.
