[~sgregory42], I'd take a look at https://github.com/apache/hbase-native-client
that Guanghao just created.
As far as I remember, DML operations (e.g. Put, Delete) were working with
(some) HBase versions, but DDL operations (e.g. create table, disable table)
did not work.
The client could use some software engineering rigor to get up to speed and
_not_ be in the unknown state. Things like PreCommit checks and
packaging/release automation.
I think you'd be able to find lots of stuff to poke at just by trying to use
the driver :)
