Opening because this breaks
TestAsyncProcess#testRetryWithExceptionClearsMetaCache on branch-2 and less.
Going to revert because this nice change but trivial and I'm trying to cut a
release (Seems ok in master given it passed on the PR but master has lots of
flakey tests these times).
