       The gRPC 
[spec](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-specification/blob/3e380e249f60c3a5f68746f5e84d10195ba41a79/specification/trace/semantic_conventions/rpc.md#grpc)
 is an extension on the baseline RPC spec.
   
   As for how they implement it in auto-instrumentation, that's a good 
question... I think [this is their 
code](https://github.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java-instrumentation/blob/ac91dc0/instrumentation/grpc-1.6/library/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/instrumentation/grpc/v1_6/GrpcRpcAttributesExtractor.java).
 It looks like they actually do string parsing of the output of 
`Method#getFullName` (which seems worse than my solution), and use the 
`$package.$service` value directly, as I have done.

       Not really. Reading fields out of the `Method` instance is redundant, 
yes, but it's just member variable access. The cautionary comment is repeated 
because it pertains to both code sections.
