Hmm... So HBaseAdmin.checkHBaseAvailable checks in part of 
ZooKeeperConnectionException, but now this will not fall through the 
HConnectionImplementation.abort, but instead will attempt to reestablish the 
connection to ZK... But, in this case there is no ZKWatcher setup, and hence 
the NPE.
