This may not be the only place where we break the compatibility of hbase 1.x HFiles, so I do not suggest adding this back. Maybe we could introduce an upgrading tool, before upgrading, scan all the HFiles to see if there are still 1.x ones, if so, trigger compactions to remove them. WDYT?
