I'm could be swayed either way about the backport but agree with Jesse about
the online snapshots. If we backport we only do the simplest non-invasive
snapshots. To me this means the offline snapshot and the simple flush online
snapshot, HBASE-7321 (as opposed to the log-roll snapshots, HBASE-7291, which
is currently on hold).
Currently protobuf already exists in hbase 0.94's code base. Although not in
the core, it is in the rest code.
