Looking through the (0.94) code a bit... It seems it is only used in SlabCache, 
which in turn is only used in DoubleBlockCache, which we know does not work.

So it seems keeping the old version is fine (unless I missed something of 
course). A related question is: Should we remove the DoubleBlockCache and all 
related classes?
