Ok, this is getting embarrassing. It turns out that some people are running
with enable assertions in production or in test environment, so the assertion
there will still cause issues.
It is not clear whether assertions should be turned on or off by default, but
even so, people might chose to -ea on their environments. So, I am proposing
yet another addendum to remove the assertion.
