Jesse Yates commented on HBASE-7413:
------------------------------------

How do people (e.g. [~lhofhansl]) feel about backporting the WALCellCodec stuff
to 0.94?

I realize that Cells are not in 0.94, but I'd really like to not have to
reinvent the wheel in terms of an HLog.Writer/Reader (and also the underlying
SequenceFileWriter/Reader) when wanting to write custom KVs to the WAL. This
wouldn't be a functional change to the way WALs are written for 0.94, just
adding a pluggable point for how we are serializing the WALEdit/HLog.Entry.

Working on a patch to enable the above for 0.94 I basically got the same
(albeit less expansive, as it had to cover far fewer cases, no pb-ing, etc)
architecture as what seems to have been done here with the codec stuff. Only
difference would be having a pluggable point for the WALCellCodec.

If people aren't against it, I can work up a patch; I don't think it would be
much more than a couple small changes to the current writer/reader and WALEdit
(in addition to the general Codec stuff, which would just delegate to the
key-value). Thoughts?
