First attempt at the patch. The early-preference is necessary to avoid choosing
smallest compactions in cases like 50 49 48 49 50, and getting screwed later
because all files are dissimilar. This could be solved better in a more
complicated manner by "planning" future selections, or looking at
preceding/following files, but that would be an overkill imho
