David Mollitor commented on HIVE-21748:
---------------------------------------

It can be a bit surprising, because by default, 'hive.exec.mode.local.auto' is
set to 'false'. However, the Map-Join optimization will use a local MapReduce
application to perform its actions and there is no way currently to disable
that.

It may be the case that other queries that do not use MapJoin fail, but this
was the one I found most easy to repo against.

To work around this issue therefore, one must disable the Map-Join optimization.

{code:sql|title=Disable MapJoin}
set hive.auto.convert.join=false;
<query>
{code}

>             Project: Hive
>          Issue Type: Bug
>          Components: HBase Handler
>    Affects Versions: 4.0.0, 3.2.0
>            Reporter: David Mollitor
>            Priority: Major

> {code:java|title=HBaseStorageHandler.java}
>     if (this.configureInputJobProps) {
>       LOG.info("Configuring input job properties");
> ...
>       try {
>         addHBaseDelegationToken(jobConf);
>       } catch (IOException | MetaException e) {
> throw new IllegalStateException("Error while configuring input job
> properties", e);
>       }
>    }
>   else {
>     LOG.info("Configuring output job properties");
>     ...
>   }
> {code}
> What we can see here is that the HBase Delegation Token is only created when
> there is an input job (reading from an HBase source). For a particular stage
> of a query, if there is no HBASE input, only HBASE output, then the
> delegation token is not created and will cause a failure.

> You can tell it will fail because an HDFS Token will be created, but it will
> not report an HBASE token in the HS2 logs. The following is an example of a
> proper setup. If it is missing the HBASE_AUTH_TOKEN it will fail because it
> will try to initiate Kerberos handshake and fail.
