Scott Eade commented on HIVE-6009:
----------------------------------
I think it would be more than "nice" to support this. I think it is absolutely
required. Given a unixtime ("number of seconds from unix epoch") there is
currently now way that I can see to use this value to get a UTC timestamp.
Sure I could use to_utc_timestamp(timestamp, string timezone), but what value
should I use for the timezone parameter? Most other date functions are running
in UTC but this one suddenly takes the system timezone into account. Not very
helpful.
> Add from_unixtime UDF that has controllable Timezone

> Currently the from_unixtime UDF takes into a account timezone of the system
> doing the transformation. I think that implementation is good, but it would
> be nice to include or change the current UDF to have a configurable timezone.
> It would be useful for looking at timestamp data from different regions in
> the native region's timezone.
> Example:
> from_unixtime(unix_time, format, timezone)
> from_unixtime(1293840000, dd MMM yyyy, GMT-5)
