I had similar thoughts, and what if there are other transforms that are positioned a bit lower but don't have to be part of the "collapse"? It sounds like a fun idea, but it's really hard. The only option I see is some sort of new transform/type which could contain those transforms, and then show a balloon that contains the content when hovering over it. But you won't have the fancy expand/collapse feature. The only other applications I know that have a concept like this do not allow you to do free form drawing.
