Thanks. {{\-Dgit.version}} is only necessary for when you're building from a
source tarball (or something else that isn't actually a git repo). Cloudera's
internal build process relies on exporting a source tarball so we use this to
make sure we still get git version information (so we know what we're running.)
It's optional and if it's not passed, we'll fill it in from the git
information, or put (unknown) if there is no git info.
