Review Comment:
   I think @findinpath has in mind to store the location of the metadata.json 
of the storage table instead of its identifier to establish the connection. 
This way you don't have to register the storage table in the catalog. This 
entails that the storage table metadata.json file needs to be updated without 
the catalog.
   
   From what I understand, the iceberg community wants to move away from the 
metadata.json files in the long term. And as a consequence the storage table 
must be stored in the catalog.
