I'd like to work on this. The analysis above points to a minimal fix: null-guard `checkCurrentMetadataLocation` so that when `refresh()` yields no metadata (table was never persisted), the status check resolves to FAILURE instead of NPE → UNKNOWN — plus reviving the create-failure test coverage from #6499 in `TestHiveCommits`.
