At the moment least restrictive type between VARCHAR( x ) and DECIMAL( y, z ) 
is DECIMAL(precision=32767, scale=16383). See TypeCoercionTest 
testVarCharToNumeric ( * ).

Investigate why that happens and whether it is a problem or not.
