I think the main reason of code duplication is functionality copying of 
binary-reader-writer by raw-methods.

bq.  We definitely should spend some time on refactoring of the whole binary 
infrastructure, because otherwise it will become (already?) unmanageable very 
soon.
I completely agree with you.
