It should be possible to configure Impala to connect to an Iceberg REST Catalog
instead of (/ in addition) to HMS.
In such cases Impala would retrieve database / table information from the
Iceberg REST Catalogs directly. We wouldn't even need CatalogD in some
deployments.
We could implement this feature by implementing a new MetaProvider.
In the long-term we might extend the MetaProvider interface with an
AuthzProvider and AuditConsumer, etc.
This will also pave the way for multi-catalog support in Impala.
