Arnab Karmakar created IMPALA-15453:
---------------------------------------

             Summary: Non-HiveCatalog Iceberg partition operations return NULL
summary
                 Key: IMPALA-15453
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15453
             Project: IMPALA
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: Catalog, Frontend
            Reporter: Arnab Karmakar

For Iceberg tables not in HiveCatalog (for example
'iceberg.catalog'='hadoop.tables'), {{{}ALTER TABLE ... DROP PARTITION{}}},
{{SET PARTITION SPEC}} and {{EXECUTE}} return NULL as the summary instead of
the Iceberg message. The same statements on HiveCatalog tables return the
expected summaries.

Repro:
{code:java}
create table ice_ht (i int, s string) partitioned by spec (i) stored as iceberg
tblproperties('iceberg.catalog'='hadoop.tables');
insert into ice_ht values (1,'a'),(2,'b'),(3,'c');
alter table ice_ht drop partition (i = 1); -- summary: NULL
alter table ice_ht set partition spec (s); -- summary: NULL
alter table ice_ht execute expire_snapshots(now()); -- summary: NULL{code}
Expected:
{code:java}
'Dropped 1 partition(s)'
'Updated partition spec.'
'Snapshots have been expired.' (what HiveCatalog tables return).
{code}
