Peter Rozsa created IMPALA-15578:
------------------------------------
Summary: Enable coordinator-only DDL without FE/BE roundtrip with
Iceberg REST Catalogs
Key: IMPALA-15578
URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15578
Project: IMPALA
Issue Type: Sub-task
Components: Backend, Frontend
Reporter: Peter Rozsa
For REST-catalog DDL, execute the statement entirely inside the coordinator FE
and
return a terminal result from planning, so the BE performs no catalog execution
step at
all: no {{{}TDdlExecRequest{}}}, no async DDL thread, no
{{{}ProcessCatalogUpdateResult{}}}, and no second FE entry point.
h3. Proposed shape
The precedent already exists for a statement that is fully resolved by the FE
and
returns only a summary row: {{{}TStmtType.NO_OP{}}}. The FE sets the result
metadata and
payload at {{{}Frontend{}}}, and the BE's entire execution is:
{code:java}
case TStmtType::NO_OP:
if (exec_req.__isset.noop_result) {
SetResultSet(exec_req.noop_result);
}
return Status::OK();
{code}
A REST DDL can take the same route: perform the catalog mutation against the
REST
endpoint through the FE's own {{{}IcebergRESTCatalog{}}}, then return a request
whose only
output is the "summary" row that DDL already produces. The {{NO_OP}} exec-state
transition
INITIALIZED -> FINISHED is already handled.
