Arnab Karmakar created IMPALA-15683:
---------------------------------------

             Summary: Iceberg identity partition: empty string and NULL
collapse on insert
                 Key: IMPALA-15683
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/IMPALA-15683
             Project: IMPALA
          Issue Type: Bug
            Reporter: Arnab Karmakar

For a table partitioned by identity STRING column s, inserting NULL and '' in
one statement can write all rows under __HIVE_DEFAULT_PARTITION__. Reads then
show empty string for every row, including rows inserted as NULL.

Breaks correctness of string predicates and tests that need '' and NULL as
distinct partition values.

{code:SQL}
CREATE TABLE p (i INT, s STRING) PARTITIONED BY SPEC (s) STORED AS ICEBERG;
INSERT INTO p VALUES (0, NULL), (1, ''), (4, 'ab');
SELECT i, s, s IS NULL FROM p ORDER BY i;
-- all rows: s='', is_null=false{code}
