This is specific to RDF/XML. Turtle et al include the line and column number. It may be quite convoluted, given the way the checking is current done on a StreamRDF from the RDF/XML parser. That said the RDF/XML parser is slowly moving to be less independent of the rest of jena. It used to be available as a standalone tool and not it isn't.
