Thanks for report.

But :
- We cannot implement what you want as for example on my side as a tester, I
want to be notified of any setup error and have the test stop if my backend
listener is misconfigured
- From your logs it's not clear for me what is happening, as if I try to
reproduce it locally with an IllegalStateException being thrown the test would
stop. 


1/ So the issue in JMeter I guess is that we don't check the connectivity to
InfluxDB on setup and accept a wrong URL.
This would be the acceptable bugfix on my side.

2/ Can you confirm that your test plan uses both InfluxdbBackendListenerClient
and the 3rd party  rocks.nt.apm.jmeter.JMeterInfluxDBBackendListenerClient
