This seems to be a question for the users (or developers) mailing list.
To answer a bit here: On systems with unix-style line endings (like MacOS X),
you should use the tar.gz files. The zip files are packed with DOS-style
line-endings (for Windows systems). But an even better option is to clone the
git repo and start from there.
