I suppose I should note that the above comment is assuming that KUDU-1694 isn't 
being used at the same time. If we implement KUDU-1694 and let the client 
specify the desired row format, then there's no ambiguity about the format of 
the returned result batch. (either we agreed to the format they asked for or we
