Summary: reduce exception spew in common Java client error

Currently in somewhat common conditions (eg trying to use the client without
krb5 credentials on a secure cluster) the Java client spews pages and pages of
exceptions. We should make a concerted effort to clean this up so that users
have a good experience with the client.
