Will Berkeley commented on KUDU-981:
------------------------------------
I'd like to work on this. I have a small patch with rules based on the [Impala
identifiers
rules|http://www.cloudera.com/documentation/enterprise/latest/topics/impala_identifiers.html].
Specifically I (hope) it enforces the rules
- The minimum length of a table name is 1 character.
- The maximum length of a table name is 128 characters.
- An identifier must start with an alphabetic character. The remainder can
contain any combination of alphanumeric characters and underscores.
- An identifier can contain only ASCII characters.
It doesn't enforce case-insensitivity.
If you think it's worth it, I'll push it to Gerrit and it can be a basis for
discussion and improvement.
Not going to lie though, I'll miss dangerous, dangerous freedom:

> Currently I believe we allow table names such as "", " ", etc. We should
> probably figure out a reasonable subset of characters and validate names.
