Yes - my intelligence or technical skills have both been openly questioned
at times in male-dominated environments. It's _always_ been in situations
where the men didn't know me - like in physics classes or being around
newly-hired geeks at work. Just yesterday a couple of new tech support guys
overheard a co-working giving me the specs for his dream machine. When he
finished listing everything, and just as I was getting ready to say "but
don't you think maybe you should go with a different motherboard?" or
something, one of the new hires looked at me and said with a big smirk "Did
you get all that?". 'Course the rest of the office just let out a groan to
indicate "you have no idea who you just said that to...". Luckily my mom
raised me tough, and I refuse to let that kind of stuff stop me from asking
questions and learning.
I did feel a bit lonely sometimes at high school science competitions being
surrounded by guys, too, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
