Cassandra Targett commented on LUCENE-9020:
-------------------------------------------

bq. So instead of limiting ourselves to doing things the same way as before
which was due to how the old CMS worked, we should instead ask ourselves "How
would we do it today?".

I hear you about not just doing it the same way because we always have but I
think I'm generally pretty open to changes to the process, especially
considering I'm making some pretty major ones right now all by myself.

bq. Tons of open source projects host their docs on ReadTheDocs and similar and
they offer nice services with versioning, search, building docs from git branch
etc.

ReadTheDocs sites are generally beautiful and provide many tools, as you
mention. To make such a change, though, we're talking about _massive_ changes
to every aspect of the Guide: how we build it, how we edit it, the file format
(RTD at least does not support Asciidoc), the design, the page layout, the
navigation...pretty much everything.

I won't say RTD wouldn't be better, I don't know. I've been thinking of other
changes of similar scale that I planned to experiment with soon, but I guess if
what you want is a wholesale replacement of what we have today with something
else, I'll wait to see how this shakes out.

> Currently we check in all versions of RefGuide (hundreds of small html files)
> into svn to publish as part of the site. With new site we should find a
> smoother way to do this.
