I'm going to merge this in. Doesn't seem to do any harm. I've made a few
improvements like added os/jvm matrices - we can potentially run different
combinations now or in the future. macos-latest works fine, for example. I just
didn't want the checks to run longer than they do (and macos-latest takes twice
the time of ubuntu-latest).
