[~mikemccand] not sure who uses it. There are no direct references to it in the 
Lucene codebase (outside of tests), but it was added as a sandbox query type in 
LUCENE-8769.

[~atris] since it looks like you're the original author, could you have a quick 
look to validate this is in fact an identified bug (and a reasonable fix)?
