I think this is mainly caused by the fact that the original code was already following some common pattern (maybe it was created by ChatGPT?). @ChrisHegarty wrote it and while looking for patterns of the code like this, it seems also used commonly INSIDE the JDK, e.g. when reference counting is done otherwise.
