Thanks Uwe! Agreed that the user should not have to choose an implementation in production. I was raising this PR following a discussion with @gsmiller on [this thread](https://lists.apache.org/thread/ct04woc11hh9vclhscz8pkdozv6xoy6k), and wanted to first put this out in the sandbox module and see what the community thinks of the implementation and the benchmark. Do you think this looks good to make this trade off on behalf of users when terms length is beyond a threshold?
